When it comes to video production in South Africa, it’s not just about filming — it’s about storytelling with purpose. For this music video, we had the privilege of working with the talented duo Tuin & Ampie, whose heartfelt song inspired a concept rooted deeply in emotion and awareness.
As the creative director, our goal was to translate the message behind the song — one about mental health and hidden struggle — into powerful, visual storytelling. The song speaks of how people often appear to be fine on the outside, but may be battling anger, frustration, or despair within. This concept was inspired by a close friend of Tuin’s who went through such struggles, and we wanted to honour that story through authentic, cinematic expression.
The Purpose of a Creative Director in Music Video Production
In any professional video production in South Africa, the creative director plays a crucial role in bridging the artist’s emotion and the audience’s perception. Our process begins by listening deeply — not just to the melody, but to the message. Once the concept is locked in, we move into moodboards, locations, props, wardrobe, and emotional tone — shaping a visual style that supports the heart of the song.
